Shiatsu is a gentle holistic form of Japanese healing bodywork, using the meridians (energy channels) and acupressure points for rebalancing the body’s own energies and re-aligning the different systems: physical, mental and emotional, to bring these energies into harmony, to reduce tension, improve circulation, increase body awareness, create a feeling of well-being and treat a variety of conditions.

Shiatsu is a Japanese word: "shi" meaning finger, and "atsu" meaning pressure. But Shiatsu is more than acupressure. It is far more than our usual concept of massage as well. Here we have a combination of many different techniques including pressing, rotating, stretching, lifting, grasping, hooking, shaking, patting, vibrating, rolling, brushing etc.

Given through loose, comfortable clothing, treatments usually take place on a padded futon or a mat at floor level. Alternatively a massage table or chair can be used.

Shiatsu therapists use palms, fingers and elbows, even knees and feet, to treat the body with comfortable pressure. Following treatment, there can be a feeling of increased vitality and you may feel invigorated yet relaxed. Since every person is different, after the session people will react in different ways to treatment. The most common treatment reactions are: increase or decrease of energy level, emotional response/release, Lightheadedness, Fatigue, Headache, change in menstruation.
